Today I urge you to share your story to add value to your business, to your community, and to the world.
Every day we have the chance to share our stories:
Who we are. What we stand for. What we believe. What we are capable of.
Our stories and who we really are show up in our actions. The real truth tends to show up when are in pressured situations, when where we are forced to make difficult decisions, and when we need to disagree and pick a stance that is different from what is popular.
We sometimes find our selves in situations where people may know bits and pieces of us, but not the real we are, and we have to ask ourselves some hard questions. Who's fault is that? Have your actions displayed who you really are? Can you honestly say that with your actions, have been true to the real you? Can you think of a time in a formal or business setting that you buttoned up and kept an opinion or 2 to yourself in order to keep things running smoothly... even if you disagreed.
Whether you are a business, a professional or a friend, if you are not sharing your true and authentic story, then you are giving the world the wrong story. And if you are giving the wrong story, you are denying yourself the opportunity to contribute in a way that matters to you, the people, and the world around you.
We all want to be seen for who we are. We spend our days fighting for it. Some people express who they are physically with clothes, hair, tattoos. For some of us it comes out in the careers we chose, the businesses we create, the causes we contribute to, how we raise our families, how we interact with our friends and coworkers.
I promise you there is something unique about you and what you are doing. When someone is truly interested in your opinion and your message, it is exciting to share!
Not being seen is difficult. Do you remember a time when someone misperceived your actions and how painful and disappointing that was? That misperception causes your strengths, character traits, and your message to be underrepresented. When the story people take take with them is untrue it feels unfair. None of us want to put the wrong story out int the world. The story that you know is not really yours.
The way I want you to show up today is to clarify your story. Because, when you share your story and you help people see you, they can help you, and you can help them...
You will gain credibility and that is something that real. We are all a work in progress, don’t be ashamed to share what you are still learning. I want to quote Ira Glass from This American Life episode 585. He was speaking about ignorance.
“A huge part of our ignorance is the stuff we used to know that we have all forgotten, All our lives there is a huge undertow of forgetting.”
I just want to say it again. We are all a constant work in progress.
Think about your background, and what has made you who you are. What are the lessons that you have learned that you have forgotten? What are the more powerful lessons that you still need to learn? What are the things about you that you know you need to change, and the things about you are unwilling to change? Again, you can apply this directly to your business!
I want you to think about what you want people to know about your experience, the things you take pride in. Find the place where you have power, control, where you know you can add value, and be useful.
I want you to think about how you show up in the world, and see if you are representing yourself in a way that people can see you. Think about the people, systems, or areas of life where you want to create change, and how you fit into the equation, and I want you to act like it.
That way, when people meet you, work with you, know you, it is more clear who you are. My hope is that in telling you this you will live in a way that people will see you, so they can help you, so you can help them.
